Cressingham Gardens: Judicial Review Update

The High Court has agreed an order that enables the council to move forward with its plans for Cressingham Gardens. This includes contracts with the development management team (DMT), allowing secure tenants to move away and the purchasing of leasehold and freehold properties.

The order enables the council to progress Cressingham Gardens in most respects, apart from any planning or CPO applications, contractor procurement, construction or sales before the Judicial Review later this month. The agreement was made in order to limit the financial expense to the council tax payer and to allow the legal process to proceed more quickly.

Lambeth council’s Cabinet endorsed the proposal to rebuild Cressingham Gardens in March this year, following extensive consultation with residents, as they judged that it represented the best option for the future of the estate. The council will present its case explaining why they believe they have acted lawfully in respect of this decision, when the issue is heard at Judicial Review later this month.

Redevelopment Timeline

The council’s timeline for the rebuilding of Cressingham Gardens makes it clear that no demolition to facilitate redevelopment would start before winter 2018 at the earliest, so this order does not affect that schedule in any way. The next step in the regeneration of Cressingham Gardens is to appoint a development management team that will develop detailed plans for the estate. The chosen team will be announced before the end of the year.

The table below outlines the provisional timeline for the redevelopment:
